In case you can’t get enough of the Harry Potter universe, Portkey Games has got you covered. The latest in the line of augmented reality mobile games popularized by Pokemon Go is now going to be the newly announced Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Co-published and co-developed by WB Games and Niantic, they just released a teaser trailer for the upcoming game. It falls under the Portkey Games label, the same as existing Harry Potter mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

With the game set to debut in 2019, the 30-second trailer for Wizards Unite doesn’t give detail as to the gameplay itself. Instead, it’s shot from the point of view of a security camera watching a woman cast a spell on a snitch and then disappearing inside a poster requesting help to keep the Wizarding World a secret.

According to an official statement from WB Games, in Wizards Unite “players will be able to explore real-world surroundings to unravel a global mystery, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.” The official website offers the additional details that players will be members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, aimed at keeping the muggle and wizarding world separate and stopping the Calamity from happening.

Quick Take

While an AR game set in the Wizarding World sounds fun, why make it about Harry Potter? With the Fantastic Beasts movies currently releasing, it seems like it would make more sense to have a Pokemon Go-style game of collecting data on magical creatures to fill up your own copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, rather than keeping the wizard’s secret. And what does it mean that you’ll be working on a global mystery? Is this a multi-player AR game? The teaser trailer raises questions but didn’t show any gameplay to pique potential players’ interest. Question number one is – do the developers realize a snitch is an enchanted artifact and not a fantastic beast? Enquiring minds want to know. After the reception of Portkey Games’ Hogwarts Mystery, they’ll have to try and raise the bar with Wizards Unite.
