Hitman 1, 2, 3 to become single game - 'Hitman: World of Assassination'
As of January 26, content across Hitman 1, 2, 3, and the many DLC packs will merge into a single game experience called Hitman: World of Assassination. There will be an upgrade pack available (World of Assassination Deluxe Pack) and current game owners will have an option to "complete the set" by paying for content they don't already own. Hitman 1 and Hitman 2 will be removed from sale as World of Assassination becomes the single available option to play Hitman content. "There will be no more confusion over which edition to buy, what content you own, how to redeem Legacy packs or import locations, etc," IO Interactive said. "We’re done with that." This comes after many years of fans being confused over the dozens of DLCs associated with each game, creating difficulty for some people to break into the series in general.
Merging all three games and DLC will help IO Interactive bolster its live service offering plans, such as in the ambitious Freelancer roguelike mode. (Hitman's Freelancer mode functions similarly to game+ modes in other games but utilizes a roguelike model to provide users with a new criminal organization to take down from scratch, a customizable base, and more.) With this transition into live service, IO Interactive has stated that "being able to easily access all locations from across the World of Assassination is paramount to maximizing your enjoyment" of this latest mode. While it's currently unclear if IOI intends to create even more maps for users to explore in this latest update, touch-ups to maps from the 1st and 2nd games are already an exciting feature, as those two games have some of the best levels IMO. The Freelancer update has been teased for over a year, but has been delayed multiple times-- so don't expect a definitive update until later this year.
What are your thoughts on IO Interactive's moves with the Hitman series? I think this will be an excellent update for new players, as it's best to play the three games as if they're a unified story.
